WARNINGS: Attempted Kidnapping

•••••V•••••

(Name)'s heels clicked along the concrete pavement of Manchester. School bag slung over her shoulder and iced coffee in hand. It had been a long day and stressful day at Uni, and she was relieved it was finally over. She wouldn’t have to go back to class until Wednesday next week, plus it was an afternoon class so she was free to sleep in a few extra hours which was nice, really nice.

Life seemed absolutely crazy right now, it was hard to catch a break and just breathe. Hopefully she’ll be able to do that this weekend and start next week rejuvinized and ready to go. The cool chill of night created goosebumps upon her skin and (Name) quickened her pace, eager to get home and slink into the warmth of her flat, maybe steal a little extra from her boyfriend Dan.

Dan. What a lucky catch. She had met him in the oddest way as well. (Name) had been on a plane from the United States to United Kingdom, flying over to begin college while Dan had been coming back from a VidCon convention. Dan had the seat next to hers, and when putting his carry on in the overhead cabinet, he had managed to drop the 50 ton bag on (Name)’s head. He had apologized profusely, and (Name) had felt secondhand embarrassment for him, so she struck up a conversation with him. It seemed like they had more in common then even (Name) and her best friend Carla.

They ended up being in an in-depth conversation about why grape medicine is a bottle of lies should be destroyed and (Name) had knew right then and there that something had clicked between them.

Running a hand through her windswept hair, (Name) let out a soft sigh. It was late enough that the street lights lining the roads were switched on, creating a soft glow over the ground. Rush hour was over, but since it was England, cars and busses drove by frequently. She passed by the closed off underground tunnel, which meant she was almost home.

While pondering what tea to make when she arrived, (Name) failed to notice the heavy footsteps behind her until there was a knife pressed against her throat. In a startled gasp, the coffee in her hands dropped to the ground, lip popping off and it's contents splashing against her legs. "Scream and I'll slit your throat, you understand?" The man hissed into her ear. (Name) swallowed thickly and nodded tentatively.

The man began guiding her to the trunk of a car parked down the road a ways and (Name) panicked. Didn’t anyone see her? This wasn't actually happening, this was only something that happened in movies. Her father was nowhere near as skilled at Liam Neeson, plus, she hadn't talked to him in over a year. Sweat began to gather on her skin, fear, nervousness, panic, it all began to encase her, eat away at her, even in such a short amount of time.

Her bag was ripped from her and she was shoved into the trunk. Her heart pounded erratically as the car's engine started up and the vehicle began moving. She began to hyperventilate, curling herself into a ball and sobbing. It took a few minutes to calm down from her emotion and mental rupture and come back to her senses. She knew the last thing she should do is panic but she’d never been kidnapped before! She couldn’t call the police considering her phone was still in her bag, the bag that was now lying out on the road somewhere.

She remembered that movie she watched with Dan one day, it was a situation similar to this. A teenage girl was thrown into a trunk, she called 911 and was secretly talking to the operator the whole time. Halle Berry played her, what was it call= The Call! That’s what it was. It all came back now. The operator had told the girl to kick out the headlights and wave her arm out of the hole it created.

So that’s exactly what (Name) did.

Dan hated driving on highways. Too many twats not paying attention or just plain old dickheads speeding with no need, like the guy in front of him. He kept slowing down and speeding up and it was really throwing Dan off track. He was starting to regret buying a car. But the subway was much worse, goddamn Oyster Cards.

Besides, if he didn’t have his own vehicle, he wouldn’t be able to get to Tesco’s and back before (Name) got home. He knew how much stress she had been under the past few days and had taken it upon himself to make dinner for her tonight. He was a shameless hopeless romantic, so it was going to be candle lit… If Dan hadn’t forgotten to buy the candles. So off to Tesco’s it was, hopefully he’d be able to get back before (Name) did.

“Oh for christ's sakes, you arse.” Dan muttered to himself, glaring daggers at the blue car ahead of him. Not only was the guy a terrible driver, but his right blinker looked like it was broken. Upon a closer look, Dan realized that the light seemed to be coming out of the car. It suddenly dislodged and Dan had to swerve to prevent running it over and popping his tire. He looked back to the car, it didn’t seem like the guy had noticed, typical.

Then he saw the arm.

His heart stopped when he the puzzle pieces clicked together. Wiggling his phone from his jean pocket, Dan punched in 999.

“Emergency, which service?” The woman asked in monotone. “The police please.” Dan replied. “One moment.” The lady said, transferring his call. “Manchester Police Department, what’s your emergency?” A different woman asked.

“I’m driving on Junction 8, headed towards Prestwich, and there’s a blue Sedan in front of me, they’ve been slowing down and speeding up quite a bit, and the right side blinker just popped off and I think someone’s in the trunk because an arm poked out and it’s waving.”

Dan could hear the clicks of the operator’s keyboard on the other side of the line. “A blue Sedan you said?” She asked. “Correct.” Dan quickly replied, keeping his eyes on the still waving hand. “What is your name?” She asked. “Dan Howell.” He informed. “Would you be able to trail the car so the police can find it easier, because if there is someone in the back, we want to get them out at soon as possible.”

‘Well no shit Sherlock.’ Dan thought. “No, I’d be fine with that, I’m in a Black Buick Verano.” He informed. Dan was sure (Name) would understand why he wouldn’t be there where she got home.

“Thank you Sir, the police are on their way, just keep tailing him for me.” The woman said. “Will do.” Dan nodded. He hung up with the operator, tossing his cell phone onto the passenger seat.

The car merged into the right lane, getting ready to get off at the next exit, so Dan, (as smooth and casual as he could manage in a car) merged as well. He followed the car to a parking lot, parking a couple spots behind him. The man got out and began walking towards Dan’s car.

Dan held his breath, but before the man could get too close, the police arrived, gun pointed, shouting to get on the ground. They apprehended the man easily, slapping cuffs on his wrists and leading him, kicking and screaming into the back of a police car.

Dan exited his own car, shaking hands with the officer that started to thank him as other policemen began to pry open the trunk. “Most people don’t call when they see that, believe it or not, nor do they agree to follow them, you saved a life today, thank you.”

Dan muttered out a weak ‘you’re welcome’, not sure what else to say. He turned to look as the policemen finally opened the trunk and pulled someone out.

Dan’s heart dropped for the second time that day. “Oh my god.” He gasped, running over, pushing policemen aside and pulling a sobbing (Name) into his arms. She knew who it was instantly and gripped the fabric of his shirt tight in her hands, tucking her face into his neck. “It’s okay, it’s okay, it’s okay.” Dan cried, rocking her back and forth. Tears rolled down his cheeks and onto (Name)’s skin. To think that if he hadn’t seen her, to think she was- it was too much to think about.

“You saw me, you saw me waving.” (Name) said with a hiccup. “I did, I did, and I got you, you’re safe now okay?” Dan replied and (Name) nodded, resting her head against his chest. An ambulance pulled up and Dan tucked his arms under his girlfriend's legs, lifting her up and walking her over. “I’m not hurt.” (Name) mumbled. “Just let them check you over, for me?”

After she was given the okay, and the police took her statement and they were allowed to go home, (Name) wrapped her arms around Dan’s neck, his own arms wrapping around her waist in a silent but loving embrace.

“Would you look at that.” One officer said to another. “Fate can be a beautiful thing.” The female officer replied as they watched to two with soft smiles on their faces.
